Shopping And Night Out At Dar es Salaam

While not very popular for its night life, the place is still good for a night out, provided you love music.

Bars and night clubs

Some of the night clubs worth visiting are the Cynics Café and the Wine bar, the Q-bar to name a few. Most of these places are also referred as sports bars as along with the drinks, they screen sports, if not live music. Bars in a hotel are a safe and descent bet for a good cocktail such as that in the Kilimanjaro Hotel.

Slipway, The Corner Bar in Masaki, The Garden Bistro with Indian, African and Western Music  and The Irish Pub in Masaki too make for a good night out as well.

Among the nightclubs in Dar es Salaam, the Bilicanas is a popular one. It has all kinds of music as well, ranging from Congolese to hip-hop. California dreamers is another popular club here.

Sweet n Easy is another good roof top club that stages live music on Friday.

Restaurants

A number of posh and low budget restaurants can be found in Dar es Salaam. Among the good ones are Addis which serves authentic East African cuisine, the posh Alcove that serves Chinese and Indian food, the reasonably priced Chef’s pride. Other than these, there is an affordable Epi d’or, the French run café-cum bakery.

The pricey Sawasdee is a rooftop restaurant in the New Africa Hotel that comes along with a nice sea view with a variety of cuisine with barbecue with variety of wines as well.

Shopping

For the shopaholics among you, shopping around Samora Avenue for handicrafts, the Ilala market or the Kariakoo market could turn out to be a fun experience.

Visiting the local fish market on Kivuukoni Front and watching the auction of fishes is something you might want to see.

Msasani Slipway Weekend Craft Market is good to lay hands on some handicrafts.  The Nyumba ya Sanaa or the Nyerere Cultural Center is a local artists’ cooperative that has good textiles and regional crafts. Another place for some good handicrafts in the city is The Mwenge Carver’s Market.

For painting lovers, the Tingatinga centre has some beautiful pieces of work.

At Dar es Salaam, having a night out would take you some effort and you might need to make some local friends to guide you on that. Once that part is done with, the deal that you get might just turn out to be great. With a number of cuisines available at restaurants across the city along and also the offerings of traditional Tanzanian food, there is plenty on the tourists’ platter to rejoice.
