Places Of Tourist Interest In Phnom Penh

Even though recently developed city for tourism, Phnom Penh has various amazing tourist destinations. The spectacular city attracts thousands of national as well as international tourists every year. The city will truly make you extend you stay in the city due to its amazing and beautiful features. Many sites of major interests are located quite near to the rivers. These sites would surely make you have a walking tour but don’t worry you will get number of places in your way for refreshments. The most interesting tourist attractions are open seven days a week.

Royal Palace is a magnificent place is located on the banks of river Mekong. The palace was built in year 1866 by king Norodom on the former citadel. The throne halls are inside the glittering walls. Nowadays, only the Silver Pagoda is open foe the public visit. Inside the palace is the Chan Chaya Pavilion which was specially designed for the performance of Cambodia’s classical dance.

The Silver Pagoda is also popularly known as the pagoda of the emerald Buddha. It is located inside the compound of the famous Royal palace. The floor of this silver pagoda is constructed with total 5000 silver blocks. The Baccarat crystal made statue of emerald Buddha is situated in the center of the silver pagoda phnom penhpagoda. The Kher versions of Ramayana are present on the walls of the pagoda.

The National Museum is located near the Royal palace is the must-visit for all the tourist and visitors of Phnom Penh. There is a huge display of Cambodian art which will give you a brief idea regarding the Cambodian history. Also there is an excellent collection of Khmer art. The sculptures here are constructed of sandstone and they belong to both Angkorean as well as pre-Angkoreon eras. The museum is built during 1917 and 1920. The museum has terra-cotta-roofed structure and has a traditional Cambodian art. The museum also has a large number of free-tail bats. It is believed that the museum has the largest group of bats living in any man made structure anywhere in the world.

Tuol Sleng Prison was initially a high school it was latered converted to jail and now it is famous as genocide museum. It is believed that a huge number of horrors and trocities were committed in the prison. Inside the old school you will come across hundred of photos of the tortured people. Around 17,000 people were sent to Tuol Sleng prison.

Baset is located at the top of a sanctuary called Prasat Srey krup leak which is also known as the temple of perfect woman. It is located ata distance of about 32km. The caves have definitely influenced the design of the temple. The temple faces the west direction which is wrong according to the Khmers’ temples designed which are always faced in the east direction. The site was a place of worship for a number of years later the Brahmans changed it to a hindu site.

Few other Tourist Attractions of Phnom Penh are, Independence and Liberation memorials, Thunder Ranch, Cheoung Ek, Cheoung Ek Mekong Island, Phnom Chiso, Koh Dach, Tonle Bat, Wat Nokor, Phnom Tamao, Baset, Prasat Neang Khmao, Oudong, Angkor Borei.
