Evening Tea On Café Terraces

If you want to take a break from the mesmerizing destinations of the city and fear getting lost into its past, there are plenty of other options to have a good time while you are in Tunis.

There are a couple of bars and nightclubs in the Capital City of Tunisia, though most of them in large hotels and hence expensive. Only one or two of them would make for a comfortable ambience for women who wish to drink.

However, there are a number of cafes around, where you can sip your tea and watch the worlds pass by. You could also try the cuisine that the restaurants serve here and there are a number of them that suit the pockets of all.

Shopping too can be great fun in Tunis, especially in its medina.

Nightlife in Tunis

The night out scene at this North African city may not be very loud, but it is certainly not missing here. There are quite a couple of bars and nightclubs around. A popular nightclub here is Bora Bora, which is also a part of the luxury hotel. The Café M’Rabet too is a well stocked bar.

The Bar Jamaica at Hotel el-Hana International on the very same avenue is an exception where women, preferably accompanied by women are welcome to have a good time with lounge music. Oscars is another bar that has live music on the weekends.

In the suburban area of La Sourka is the Le Boueuf le Troit, which is a bar cum restaurant and has dance floor, DJs, live music on weekends and Jazz evenings on Sundays.

There are fine dining places as well in Tunis that are open till the wee hours of the morning. One of them is La Mama Restaurant that server authentic dishes sprinkled with Italian delicacies. Live music and performances too entertain the guests of this restaurant.

There are café terraces along the Habib Bourguiba Avenue that are busy with people until late in the evening, though there is no alcohol served here.

The resorts at hotels in La Marsa and Gammarth have night clubs as well. The cafés in Sidi Bou Said make for good hang out places to sip your mint tea or smoke a narguileh or waterpipe.

Restaurants

A number of restaurants around the city offer good options to eat out, and cater to all kind of budgets.

For Tunisian cuisine in a posh hotel, Dar el-Jeld is best.  Other luxury restaurants of the city are F le Restro, a trendy eatery with excellent Mediterranean food at Bysra Hill in Carthage and Lucullus, the posh fish and seafood restaurant with a terrace at the city’s harbour, La Goulette.

For a lost-cost sumptuous meal, Café de Paris Brasserie that serves traditional Tunisian food is good and so is Le Malouf, an Italian restaurant that also has live music on weekends.  The L’Orient is a mid ranged restaurant that serves delicacies like steaks, fish and lamb preparation. Berber Lamb is a popular dish of this restaurant.

Shopping

The shopping centers in this city are mainly centered in the souks of medina and reflect the rich cultural tradition and craftsmanship of the artisans of this city. Of course, bargaining is a must when you are shopping at Tunis.

The Jemaa ez-Zeytouna is a major shopping attraction of the city where you can choose from a range of souvenirs and mostly, distinct craft items at each souk. For perfumes and spices, Souk el-Attarine is the place. For silver jewellery, go to Souk de la Laine. Souk el-Trouk is a tailor-cum-antique shop. For fabric and clothes, Souk des Etoffes gives a good deal and traditional fell skullcaps can be found at Souk des Chechias.

Plenty of government shops like The Societe de Commercialisation des Produits de l’Artisanat sell authentic handicrafts. Hunis too is good, though heavy on your pockets.

Shopping and eating out add more fun to this even otherwise enjoyable and historic city.
