The concert hall has an extremely eventful past, and is considered among the best auditoriums in France. There have been major acts like A C / D C, Metallica, Aerosmith, Mark Knopfler, Sting and many more international artists and pop singers. The Halle Tony Garnier was erected in the period between the years 1909 & 1914.

The concert hall is in the nature of an icon for the city of Lyon. The Hall was opened in the year 1914 at first as a part of the “industrial city” project. In the present time, the halle Tony Garnier is a venue for concerts, performances and exhibitions, it is a fact known to few that the concert hall was until quite recently a meat market for the city of Lyon.

The Halle Tony Garnier was until the year 1974 owned by a slaughter house in Lyon, and it was in the year 1975 categorized as a major historical structure. The hall also saw temporary use as an arsenal during the W W I. The Halle Tony Garnier is named after the architect Tony Garnier.

The architect derived inspiration from the glass and steel “metallic” architecture that was prevalent in the 19 t h century. The architect designed a purely concrete building with a steel frame supporting it, and an excellent glass roof, that made beautiful use of natural light. The hall is the last surviving example of the metallic architecture now.

The hall is extremely versatile and has excellent acoustics; there have been major bands that have performed here to packed audiences, as well as a number of business exhibitions and conventions. The concert hall is bathed in light constantly because of the splendid glass roof that lets all the light in. The 17, 000 sq meters of space, all of it without annoying pillars, which can be adjusted in whatever way possible makes for an excellent setting for all kinds of gatherings and functions.

Close to eight thousand spectators can be seated in the Halle Tony Garnier, and more than 16, 500 people along with standing capacity is reached when larger events are held. Thus the Halle Tony Garnier is the 3 rd biggest in terms of size in France, after the Palais Omnisports de Paris – Bercy and the upcoming Montpellier Arena.

The Pinnacles were not discovered until the 1960’s in Australia. It was added to Nambung National Park to preserve the unique natural formation. On an average 250,000 visitors throng it. The best time to go here is from August to October when wildflowers bloom. It is best viewed in the early morning light or late afternoon. The Park is also rich in its wildlife population and you can find here Kangaroos and emus which are endemic to the region. The raw material here is sea shells that have been left by from an earlier epoch when the area was rich in marine life. By the forces of nature these shells were broken down into sands which were rich in the lime content. They formed mobile dunes. Others say that they were formed due to the leaching of lime from wind blown sand. Rain cemented the lower levels into soft limestone. Some of them are shaped like tombstone, others like termite mounds and fingers.

The Nambung National Park preserves this natural wonder of The Pinnacles. These formations are not concentrated in one area but scattered throughout the sand dunes. It will take you a three hours drive from Perth. Nearby is the fishing town of Cervantes. They were named after the river Nambung which in local aboriginal language means crooked. A 26 kilometer long coastline stretches from the sand dune .There are also limestone caves in the area. The area looks beautiful and strange at the same time when in August to October the rain falls. The wildflowers bloom during this period. The sheer contrast of the limestone formation with the colorful flowers adds a touch of mystery to the place.

The Hangover Bay in The Pinnacles is a perfect stopover. The place also provides opportunities for snorkeling and swimming. Surfing is also done here. The other important location here is the Kangaroo Point where toilets, barbeque facilities are available. Larger vehicles are not allowed in the Park. Conventional two wheelers are the preferred choice. The whole area looks like some area from another planet. There are no camping facilities in the area. You need to come prepare with sun block, tough walking shoes, and water bottle. The Dongara and Port Denison Beaches in the National Park are ideal for swimming and water sport activities. In the Fisherman’ Memorial at Port Denison there is one obelisk remaining out of the original two of 1869.

Nestled in the southwest district of Denizli, Pamukkale in Turkey has attained international recognition because of shimmering natural pools. It is a complex of terraced pools that has gained the attention of many experts as well as tourists since the ancient times. The Pamukkale pools are located in the Inner Aegean region that adorns the River Menderes’ valley where there is continuous moderate climate. Pamukkale in Turkey has now become one of the top tourist destinations because of its this unusual wonder that feature glowing white cascades.

Pamukkale is a Turkish name, which in English stands for a ‘cotton castle’. It is made up of two words wherein pamuk indicates ‘cotton’, while kale means ‘castle’. This natural spectacle has been named so due to that catchy white color of the slanting rocks of the carbonate. Pamukkale in Turkey is not the site of pools only, but it also boasts limestone-laden thermal springs, potholes, travertines, cataracts, stalactites, and terraces of flowing water filled with the various carbonate minerals. What can be more exciting for a tourist to simply have fun as with each step in the calm Pamukkale pools holding tadpoles, a vibe of calmness is felt and an experience of unique swimming hangs over? Just descending these terraces of pools makes one feel as if she or he is on a fairyland, the land whose match does not exist anywhere on the planet.

The reason behind its existence

The main reason behind the formation of the Pamukkale pools is the most hated calamity of earthquake. I know it is difficult to believe in this for most of us as earthquakes until now have done no good to the mankind and that it has only continued to take up the lives of countless including other living beings besides man. But, one needs to change this opinion a bit in the sense that earthquakes can do some good and this is evident by these beautiful terraces. This is perhaps the first time that I have come across a positive point of this calamity.

Pamukkale springs

Pamukkale springs are total 17 here, which hold hot water whose temperature remains between 35 °C (95 °F) to 100 °C (212 °F). Emerging from the nearby Cal Mountain, the spring water is rich in carbon dioxide as well as calcium salts. It is this water of the Pamukkale springs that fed the terraces made up of travertine that refers to a sedimentary rock as a residual of the flowing water of the springs. When the hot spring water reaches the surface of the terrace, it emits carbon dioxide and deposits calcium carbonate until the amount of water’s carbon dioxide becomes equal to the amount of the gas in the atmosphere. The calcium carbonate is settled down in form of a soft mixture, but with the passing time it turns to a hard substance called travertine.

As per a reliable survey, one liter of water is capable of depositing 499.9 mg of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on the travertine due to which the entire complex gets a pure shimmering white look. In reality, this deposit along with the precipitation makes the terraces to look like cotton forming a commendable landscape just over the town. However, the success of this full process is also reliant on the water flow, temperature, and weather conditions.

The mineral water of the Pamukkale springs is gathered in a pool known as the Sacred Pool. This name was given in the olden days and continuing to be known with the same name, the pool is now is now inside the Pamukkale hotel. You can come here for a great swimming experience amidst the legendary ruins of Hierapolis seen nearby.

Curing abilities

It has been internationally accepted that the water of Pamukkale possesses therapeutic properties that are very much soothing as well as healing for the eyes and skin. Further, it also has the power to deal with asthma and rheumatism.

Other attractions

In the olden days, the Biblical city of Hierapolis was atop this cotton castle in white. Even today, you can see the remains of this city from atop, which are at a distance of 20 km opposite of the valley. But, much of the Hierapolis ruins have been damaged in order to build hotels for the tourists.

Since 40,000 years, this preserved area has been populated by the Aboriginal people and so you can expect an alluring glimpse of the aboriginal art and culture besides wildlife in this part of the Northern Territory. Today, this land is the home of around 500 Aboriginals of which many own the park.

This esteemed area of the Northern Territory boasts three diverse features – cultural, ecological, and biological. Speaking about its last two features, the Kakadu national park tour includes its four major river systems, six major landforms including tidal flats and the stone country, over 12000 species of flora and fauna, and the Ranger Uranium Mine. Talking about its cultural feature, the Kakadu national park tour offers over 5000 art and archaeological sites revealing all about the Aboriginal life.

Floral highlights

The Kakadu national park is among the weed free parks on the planet and also is the home of the richest flora in the Northern Territory. There are more than 1700 plant species here adorning its different landscapes.

The Stone Country holds the resurrection grasses that can survive in severe heat and monsoon forests in the airy gorges. The Southern Hills and Basins support several common plants unique to Kakadu such as the Eucalyptus koolpinensis. Further, the vast Lowlands are carpeted with woodland and grasses bearing wild flowers.

In the Floodplains, you can see sedges, freshwater mangroves (itchy tree), colorful water lilies, paper bark trees (Melaleuca), and pandanus. On the other hand, the Estuaries and Tidal Flats bear a majority of the mangroves species of the Northern Territory that protect the coast and support fishes, hardy succulents (samphire), sedges, grasses, and deserted monsoon forests packed with the banyan fig, large red flowers, and the kapok tree with a thorny trunk.

Fauna highlights

On your Kakadu national park tour, you can greet all types of rare and endemic animals of which some are seen either during the day or at night. There are 60 mammal species such as the nocturnal marsupials and placental mammals, 117 reptile types including two crocodiles genus and nocturnal snakes, 25 frog species on the wetlands, and 10,000 insect species including flies, grasshoppers, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, non-biting midges, and mayflies. Among the latter ones, the most stunning are the termite mounds in the south area of the park. And yes, on the Arnhem Land plateau, do not forget to spot the stunning Leichhardt’s grasshopper in black, orange, and blue.

In addition, look for the invasive species such as the Water Buffalo, Cane Toad, wild pig, and Salvinia molesta in the Magela floodplain along with the brumbies all of which have threatened the surroundings.

Natural highlights

Check out for the pretty gorges and waterfalls – Gunlom, Maguk, and Jim Jim Falls via a four wheeler drive.

Aboriginal art sites

Most of the aboriginal paintings of rock are seen at Nanguluwur, Ubirr, and Nourlangie (Anbangbang gallery) nestled in the rocky outcrops. These aboriginal arts show the following aspects:

Hunting

Religious ceremonies

Stories of the Creations and Learning

Sorcery and Magic indicating fun and play

Ubirr refers to a series of projections in the far north. Nestled on rim of the Nadab floodplain close to the East Alligator River, the site is known to witness plenty of food as revealed by aboriginal art paintings here, which also shows animals like mullet, barramundi, goanna, catfish, pig-nosed turtle, snake-necked turtle, Tasmanian tiger, and Rock-haunting Ringtail Possum. Other displays include the Rainbow Serpent occupying most of the terrain, mischievous Mimi spirits, and Namarrgarn Sisters’ tale.

Nourlangie, adorning the Arnhem Land Escarpment, is the land of several shelters associated via stairs. The dwellings boast wonderful paintings that reveal the Aboriginal belief of the creation ancestors and some more tales known only to some aboriginals. The Anbangbang Billabong exhibits a multitude of wildlife here. Besides this aboriginal art site, a small land of Nanguluwur show off the paintings of hand stencils, Namandi spirits, dynamic portrayals with boomerangs and figures, and mythical personalities such as Alkajko who is a female soul with four arms and prickly projection.

The Kakadu national park accommodations are available in the town of Jabiru, South Alligator, and Cooinda. Camping sites are also there for nominal fees and with proper facilities.

Your London travel is not complete if you do not take a tour of the London Tower. Rising bluntly in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and adorning the river Thames’ north bank, the Tower of London is a notable complex of several edifices flanked by the defending walls as well as moats. Regarded as one of the top attractions in London, it is the most ancient building that has been used by the British Government for many purposes – a royal palace, a fortress, and a prison for royal offenders. Further, the Tower of London was also utilized for armory, treasury, execution, torture, zoo, observatory, Royal Mint, and to house the glittering Crown Jewels of the state. This is the reason why I have said this London Tower as royal but wicked. Her Majesty’s Royal Palace is much more known for its landmark called the White Tower that is a bleak square citadel.

My London Travel plan included the first visit to this Tower of London. Upon the entrance, I first explored the famous Norman White Tower that is nestled in the middle of the complex. Erected by William the Conqueror in the 11th century for safeguarding the Normans from the locals, this tower is known due to a famous legend according to which the utilized mortar was raged by the blood of beasts. Check out for the four turrets just over the ramparts of which one is spherical and others are in square. The former one had once played a role of an observatory. There is a bailey to the tower’s south.

On the first level towards the east, the St John’s Chapel stands that exhibits the early Anglo-Norman religious structural design. In this chapel, the two aisles flank the nave that is divided by columns creating an arcade as well as an ambulatory. Do note the design of the column capitals as they differ – some have volutes, while a few are block-shaped. Just atop the roof, a gallery arcade illuminates the complete area.

Then, the Inmost Ward of the White Tower is worth a look, which was a royal residence with lavish edifices in the south. In the olden days, the entrance was via the now ruined Coldharbour Gate. This was where the Wakefield Tower was present in which King Henry VI while praying on the bent knees was murdered. Other highlights are the Lanthorn Tower as well as the Wardrobe Tower in the northeast.

Both the White Tower as well as the above ward resides in the Inner Ward that is flanked by a defending big curtain wall erected by Henry III. This protective structure (wall) was once surrounded by some 13 towers including the three mentioned previously, Flint Tower, Bloody tower where the princes were murdered, Brick Tower, and the famous Bell Tower whose bell never fails to strike since 500 years.

Now, it was the turn of the Outer Ward in the London Tower. This is the space between the inner wall and outer curtain wall forming a double defense. Around the new outer wall, you can spot a defensive moat too. Here, you will come across five towers looking towards Thames: Cradle tower, Byward tower, Well Tower, St Thomas’s Tower, and Develin Tower. Look for the three domed bastions on the outer wall, North Bastion, Brass Mount, and Legge’s Mount.

Forming the entrance to the tower, the water gate also known as the popular Traitor’s Gate is seen. It is named so because of the offenders accused for treachery have passed this gate including Queen Anne Boleyn. It is this gate that splits the Thomas’s Tower. There is one more entrance from the west side where a dry moat once intersected a stone bridge flanking the whole area. From here, you can be at the Byward Tower via the Middle Tower – once a gateway with the Lion Tower. This is where you can spot the British Crown Jewels, remains of the Roman citadel wall, and an armor collection. This zone is crowded by the Yeomen Warders also known as the Beefeaters – tourist guides and building guards. In the evening, they participate in the Ceremony of the Keys for protecting the buildings after dusk.

One more legendary sight is of the ravens in the Tower of London. At any point of time, at least six Ravens are always present here to justify the belief that the kingdom will start to decline in their absence. Genuinely speaking 10 ravens stay here of which 6 are on duty and 4 are standbys all belonging to the crow family, Corvus and consuming carrion as well as dead flesh. A Beefeater is a Raven master here who takes care of these ravens with the finance from the government. The house of the ravens is close to the Wakefield Tower.

So, get ready for a historic and dark London travel this time!

Brunei Darussalam is regarded among the smallest countries in the world, which adorns the zone of the Southeast Asia. Holding of two tiny fragments of land at the northern coast of Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam is the most known nation for its largest oil fields, which once had covered the complete Borneo as well as the southwest Philippines.

For the tourists, the nation is a land of several surprises. When I visited this country, I was forced to change my notion for it being a total Muslim theocracy. In fact, Brunei Darussalam is no less than a small Dubai due to its soaring mosques, aforesaid rainforest, scenic coastal hamlets, interesting boat rides, and much more to ensure you a busy and exciting schedule of sightseeing as well as activities for soaking you here for a couple of days. When you come here, ensure that you join a packaged tour for the best trip.

I started my trip from its kind capital called Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) that boasts a silent zone adorned with many notable edifices. I would suggest to come here with some time as its suburbs have much to offer, which will give you an insight of the riches that the Bandar Seri Begawan has yet well preserved. On my trip here, I visited some of the most famous sights. The Brunei Museum at a distance of 4.5 km from the central BSB, is on a con overlooking the Sungai Brunei and offers a variety of stunning edifices. This is where you will admire the Islamic Art Gallery where the major highlight is a set of magnificently illuminated Koran replicas, unbelievable Dome of the Rock, and the abalone shell. Then, you can visit the Brunei Traditional Culture Gallery, which is also captivating with its wonderful collection of all elements revealing the nation’s culture. Here, check out for the picture of an unknown sport in which two youngsters are enjoying at a grass sledding. Next, in the museum area is the Oil and Gas Gallery that shows how the underground resources make a successful attempt to be at nearest gas pump.

From the museum, descend the stairs behind and go right to be at the Malay Technology Museum where you can behold the superb life-sized stilt houses along with the information on the traditions. Water villages adorn the Gallery 1 along with the evolution of the Kampung (village) architecture since 150 years; while Gallery 2 is the hub of charming displays of handicrafts from these hamlets.

One of the most interesting edifices in the Bandar Seri Begawan is the Istana Nurul Iman that is the largest palace on Earth as per a few calculations. Regarded as the official residence of the nation’s Sultan, it can accommodate a huge staff and currently holds 1,788 rooms, 200,000 sq. m of the floor area, and 257 bathrooms. Pay homage at the largest mosque in Brunei Darussalam – Jame’Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque that shows a superb Islamic architecture commemorating the Sultan’s 25th year of rule. Come here in the evening during which its two golden domes as well as four main minarets give a striking vista after getting lit. On Thursdays and Fridays, non-Muslims are not permitted within. It is on the route to Gadong at 2.5 km from the downtown.

Want to know the tallest edifice in central Bandar Seri Begawan? Well, this is the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque that was erected in 1958 and got the name from the 28th sultan of Brunei Darussalam. It is the tallest because of its 44 m tall minaret. Interestingly, the prayer call echoes throughout the downtown before dawn and at sunset.

Taman Peranginan Tasek on the north side is an extensive green land with picnic spots, waterfall for swimming in modest robes, calm walks, and a reservoir. In the early morning or late afternoon, spot the proboscis monkeys here.

Temburong is the district of natural sights due to its intact main rainforest. The main highlights here are the Peradayan Forest Reserve for walks, the Ulu Temburong National Park in the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve, and the Iban longhouse at Batang Duri. The Ulu Temburong National Park studded with flora and fauna offers a myriad of walking trails via which you can discover the surroundings well. The primary trail offers the longest canopy path in the world. On favorable days, undertake an outing to the Sungai Apan waterfall or stay for two days at Bukit Belalong after walking a rocky path.

Then, the Kuala Belalong Rainforest Field Studies Centre, a research centre of rainforest, is where many scientists as well as school groups stay along with the visitors via a tour after permission. The main highlight here is the Outward Bound centre known for its outdoor adventure and programs. The permit is required only if you are not a part of a tour, which is time consuming. However, it is suggested to come here on a tour as this journey requires a boating that costs $150 per person. Otherwise the normal charge is $245 per person for a two-day trip including a stay at the Murut village.

Come here anytime except from September to January. Looking for a hotel in Brunei? Well, there are many good options to stay here. One famous hotel in Brunei is Ulu-Ulu Resort at the park. In the capital, look for the Rizqun International Hotel. Besides trying a hotel in Brunei, you can also choose the Lukut Intan Guesthouse at Temburong or the Intrepid Units Guesthouse at Central Bandar Seri Begawan.

Nestled in the east of Leshan town of the Sichuan prefecture in China, the Leshan Giant Buddha is regarded as the tallest structure in stone, which is of Maitreya who is the Buddha of future. This Bodhisattva appears like a quite fat monk who is shown in a sitting pose with a wide smile. According to Buddhist mythology, Maitreya will come to address religion to reintroduce the faded teachings of the Gautam Buddha. Standing proudly at the junction of three rivers namely, Qingyi, Min, and Dadu; the Giant Buddha of Leshan is sculpted from a cliff face facing the holy Mount Emei. This Leshan Buddha was built by an 8th century monk and that its construction was only over after some 90 years – 713 to 803 A.D. It goes without saying that the statue as well as the mount is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site List. It is worth taking a tour of this most picturesque site of Leshan as the locals claim, “The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain.”

As per the backing legend, the idea of forming the Leshan Giant Buddha was of the Chinese monk called Haitong in order to protect the tolerant people who were reliant on the rivers for their livelihood that had reduced slowly because of the violent currents inviting ship wrecks. In those days, it was believed that a water spirit was the main reason behind these disasters. The monk thought that the Leshan Buddha facing the river can dominate over the water spirit and then also the currents. In addition, the fallen debris from the cliff will also alleviate the water force as it will get deposited in the waters.

After some 20 years of fund collection by the monk, the construction began. However, the government who used to give funds was endangered for which the monk gouged his own eyes for confirming his sincerity. Unfortunately he died before the construction was over after which his disciples completed the task. Such a sacrifice does not go in waste and so even today despite the presence of some strong currents; no ship wrecks have taken place.

The Leshan Giant Buddha Statue

Maitreya, in its seated pose, can be seen gazing at the river with lofty eyelids and with the hands on his knees. This Leshan Buddha is so appealing that people from all around the world come to see his giant size as well as the stunning architecture. Starting right from his hairs, each of his parts is well carved. The coiled hair boasts thousands of adeptly embedded buns that adorn his head. Next, take a look at the most unusual feature – the drainage system that holds a few secret gutters as well as channels scattered on the arms and head, within the clothes, and at the rear of the ears. This is the hidden beauty of this Giant Buddha of Leshan that has acted as a protective system for the statue. These channels drain down the rainwater and ensure dryness in the internal parts.

Talking about his ears, they are quite big and are made from wood and that the surface is composed of mud. If you consider the construction technique of those days, the artisans used to find it very tough to link the ears to the stone head. Therefore, their each turns and carving is just admirable every time the statue is revered. Now coming to the shoulders, they are quite broad. The Buddha’s eyebrows are long enough to see it from far. Further, even his smallest toe nail is such apt that a person can sit on it at ease.

The Giant Buddha of Leshan is so vast that one can even see the statue from the tourist ferry. For an alternative look, do explore him from a terrace besides his ear. This one is just awesome! On one side of the terrace, do explore the modern figurine of the monk Haitong. Behind him, the Lingyun Temple Museum is also interesting that houses the different restorations of the statue.

As you pass on the ferry from Lingyun, just have a look to the south of the statue. This is because you can spot the Wuyou Si, a pink monastery that was made here in 742 AD. If time permits, then just do not miss to explore it due to its impressive decorations such as the gate guardians, sculptures of arhats in the Louhan Hall, and paintings on the second wall. The statue visit timings are 9 am to 4:30 pm and it charges the admission fee of CNY 90. However, if you are on a boat trip, the cost is CNY 70.

This time take up something different that is soothing, calming, and internally awakening. Well, I am talking about the monasteries that are always worth a look. In fact, just a look at these religious edifices can invoke inner peace in you ensuring a great rejuvenating holiday. To make it easy for you to visit, most of these monasteries listed here are in Europe and Southeast Asia.

Life of the people in a monastery is undoubtedly controlled via the rules of the community. These people are the admirers as well as practioners of celibacy and have very few or no private belongings. Talking about their livelihood, these holy men and women who reside in the boundaries are dependent for their daily needs on the sale of the agricultural goods that they grow inside with the help of cattle, rental money, donations, investment profits, or on the deposits from the other institutions. For the tourists, they have three advantages – a great drive to reach here, a memorable view of the monastery from outside, and know-how on the different monasteries. So, this is an educational-cum-fun trip.

Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery, Spain:

This is an unbelievable rock formation nestled in the Montserrat Mountain accessible from Barcelona in Catalonia. The most admiring part of this monastery is that it is visible from some miles away giving breathtaking scenery whose background is formed by the magnificent mountain. ‘Montserrat’ in Catalan refers to a jagged mountain and that it is composed from a kind of sedimentary rock.

Monastery Grigoriou, Greece:

This majestic edifice is committed to St. Nicholas and stands proudly in the austere state of Mount Athos. Established in the 17th century, it is surrounded scenically by the amazing environs. This one ranks 7th out of 20 in the hierarchical order of the Athonite monasteries. If you explore this one, remember that you are visiting one of the most well maintained monasteries. In the 18th century, the walls here were decorated by the sacred men named Gabriel and Gregory.

Nestled in Locarno, the striking spot here is the Franciscan Santuario della Madonna del Sasso (refers to a rock) church. This one is on a wooded crag over the town. This is a legendary site where the Virgin once appeared to a local monk named Bartholomeo da Ivrea who was ambling in the woods.

Yumbulagang Monastery, Tibet:

This is one more amazing monastery that is nestled on a hill that soars to the east of the Yarlong River in the Lhasa’s Naidong County. Boasting a history of more than 2000 years, this is first palace of its kind here adorned with painted walls as well as murals revealing the glorious past of Tibet. In fact, the term ‘Yumbulagang’ itself means the palace of mother and son as per the Tibetan language.

One of the main draws here is the appealing Buddha Eye Gate that welcomes one and all to the Tibetan architecture and pillars adorned in religious symbols.
