Ras Al Khaimah: Where eagles prey on the imagination
It is only you get up close that you realize the golden eagle’s claws are like a razor’s edge, lethal and cutting. The one perched on the falconer’s hand is simply clamping down with all her force and wings spread slightly, an expression of her anger. She is, in her own way, like a child that wanted a particular toy or perhaps it is more a case of a woman scorned. Hell hath no fury like it. She continues to stomp, as if evening out a small sandy dune. But she is hooded and thus no threat. I’m just glad that she isn’t perched on my hand; she seems a real handful. ‘In the wild, the female is the more dominant of the two genders. The key is to be fearless, it is almost as if they can smell it coming from a mile away. Just go in there and grab her as if you own her. Push her head down [...]
Lake Natron’s natural beauty
I feel that tingling sensation creeping up my derriere, but I ignore it for now. I cannot move, not a millimeter, since I will lose the element of stealth and cover if I do. I am in a soda lake, and the silent reminders are to make a move on, but I refuse stubbornly and stay put. It is flamingo rush hour, and I have spent the better part of five hours convincing these pink feathery friends of mine that I mean them no harm and that I am not here at all. Gawky, a bit bumbling and beautifully regal, their extensible necks and pink plumage almost make me forget that my bottom is being subjected to soda burns. I bet Sir David Attenborough was never subjected to this. The flamingoes are used to the extreme alkalinity unlike my nether regions and they feed on the algae found in soda lakes spread [...]
Expedition to Patagonia
It started out as one of those once in a life time experiences and ended up as a dream comes true. We arrived at the airport in Trelew which is about a thousand two hundred kilometers to the south of Buenos Aires. We were welcomed by a friendly tour guide to start the trip to Patagonia. We then drive to the charming coastal Puerto Madryn. A panoramic tour and a delectable lunch sets the mood for the journey ahead. Then later in the afternoon a paradise nature reserve of Peninsula Valdes awaits us. Armadillos, guanacos, gray foxes of Patagonia and the lesser rheas form a tresure trove of animals to catch sight of. Next day I remember basking in the enchanting beaches with elephant seals for company. A trekking trip around the coast will thrill the explorer in you. It sure did work for me. A [...]
Trekking in the shade of K2 Godwin Austen
The confluence of the majestic Godwin Austen Glacier and the Baltoro Glacier is known as Concordia. The name Concordia was given to it by European travelers and explorers who noted similarities in it to a namesake glacial confluence in the central Alps. The best region in all of Asia this ancient glacial power house is a treasure for mountain related enthusiasts. Although no climbing is involved, with its awe inspiring and breathtakingly stunning views, it also has on offer hikes to many important base camps of the region. The call of the wild! The hiking can take you to the base camps of Broad Peak which is two hours of enchanting terrain, K2 with its raw and rugged hiking ground and the Gasherbrums which are about a three hours journey. And climbing was not to be denied to the thrill seeking [...]

A Pun on Sinkholes?
The recent giant sinkhole that opened beneath the Guatemala City’s downtown over the weekend is all in rage right now. The only controversy in the entire scenario is that it isn’t a sinkhole, though it’s claimed to be. The supposed sinkhole is 100 foot deep, and 66 foot side circular chasm. Geologists refer to this as a “piping feature” and claim that it is wrong to call it a sinkhole. Sinkholes refer to areas where bedrock is solid but has been sucked away by groundwater, which forms a geological “Swiss cheese” whose contours are nearly impossible to predict. I have written about sinkholes a few days back. (http://www.travelworth.com/diving-into-the-sinkholes.html) The situation with Guatemala is that the lion’s share of the city is built on pumice fill of ash flows made [...]
