Breathtaking Legendary Castles In Europe

What clicks in your brain, when you hear terms like dragons, dungeons, kings, queens, ghosts, goblins? Doesn’t all this bring a flashback of ancient castles in front of the eyes? Castles, the large imposing castles, which were erected allover the world during the course of history, these majestic stone marvels are fortified structures with thick walls and towers. These grandeur architectures can be best viewed in the ‘Old World’ of Europe. These legendary marvelous are the royal symbols of grandiose and luxury.

In today’s times, some monarch rulers reside in these historical architects like the Windsor Castle. And other castles are open for tourist viewing as historical remnants and museums. So, here in my list are mentioned ten marvelous structures that grabbed my eye-balls, during my trip to Europe. First, let me clear the difference between a castle and palace as people get confused between palace and castle. While Palace serves as a home with no defensive features, Castle is a home as well as a fortress. Check them out……

1. Leeds Castle – Kent, England

Leeds Castle stands toughly from the mid-800’s, and have gained the glory of sheltering renowned personas like Edward I, Henry V and Henry VIII. As this legendary castle is a milestone in the English Land, they claim Leeds Castle as the ‘loveliest castle in the world.’ Want to check the credibility of the claim, for that you yourself will have to come and explore this legendary marvel. As from my perception, Leeds Castle is the most fabulous and extravagant one. That’s why, it has made to the top spot.

2. Glamis Castle – Glamis, Scotland

Actually I was referring Glamis Castle by the aforementioned term ‘ghost’. Now you got it. Recognized as the most eerie castle of Scotland, Glamis castle grabs everyone’s attention because of its spooky stories. There have been buzzes about this ghostly castle, that many famous personalities like Duncan and King Malcolm II hailing from the renowned Macbeth have been murdered here.

3. Frankenstein Castle – Darmstadt, Germany

Frankenstein Castle is said to have sheltered Lord Konrad Dippel von Frankenstein somewhere around the 16th century. Also, there is a popular conviction that von Frankenstein traded in his entire lifetime. Although, this highly-dedicated Lord is not amidst us today, he has occupied spaces in our hearts through the way of a renowned novel composed by Mary Shelley. This historical castle served as a source of inspiration to Mary during her visit in the early 19th century.

4. Chateau de Chambord – Loire Valley, France

Built in the year 1547, Chateau de Chambord is a feather in Europe’s cap. This legendary wonder has been a home to Louis XIV also popularly known as “Le Roi-Soleil.” Playwright Molire’s one out of many critiques is believed to be stirred by this plush castle, who displayed King’s lifestyle like indulgence and decadency. The legend says that this stupendous castle was built by 2500 men. This staggering castle consists of 440 royal rooms, this tremendous architecture is sure to leave someone’s jaw-dropping.

5. Lincoln Castle – Lincolnshire, England

Dating back to 11th century, Lincoln Castle is a legendary marvel that has sheltered the ancient hero ‘William-The Conqueror’. From the year 1787, Lincoln Castle served as a confinement to the Lincolnshire area. Its design and construction made it easy for the prisoners to evade from the prison. The prison operated actively until 1878, i.e. it ran a long run for about 90 long years.

6. Mont Saint-Michel – Normandy, France

Instituted for serving as an abbey for the pilgrims, Mont Saint-Michel sits about 60 miles from the D-Day Beaches and has been quite competent to emerge out of its image. This castle is positioned in an enthralling setting of rocky areas between Normandy and Brittany. It affords great picturesque views of the majestic Bay. After beholding the mesmerizing looks of Mont Saint-Michel, catch fun in the nearby D-Day Beaches. This lovely castle will certainly mark its unforgettable impressions.

7. Neuschwanstein Castle – Munich, Germany

Standing firmly from 1869, Neuschwanstein Castle reflects medieval style of architects as it hails from the Bavarian epoch. This legendary castle affords great spectacular views of the Pollat River Gorge. Visit during October adds more charm to this dipped-in-marvel beauty. Get there and behold the spectacular views of the surroundings from this stunning architecture.

8. El Alcazar – Segovia, Spain

A magnificent castle, a symbol of royalty creeps to the heart because of its dreamlike appearance. El Alcazar is the most heart-throbbing and picture-perfect beauties residing in Spain. Located at the center of the city, this castle is steeped in history. Isabella got married to Ferdinand and surrendered rights which lead to amalgamation of Spain.

9. Castelo de Sao Jorge – Lisbon, Portugal

At its threshold, this castle was called as Lisbon Castle and later changed to Castelo da Sao Jorge. The castle’s name was changed during the reign of King Joao in the 14th century. Set in a lovely backdrop, it affords beautiful scenic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the capital city. But in the past, Castelo de Sao Jorge was dilapidated partially, when the Spaniards subjugated it. However, the glory days followed with the coming time, i.e. during the 20th century- when the Portuguese Government came across it and discovered it as a historical milestone. The Government revamped it from the top to the bottom.

10. Prague Castle – Prague, Czech Republic

This castle was constructed between the 9th and the 18th centuries. Initially, the fortress was expanded gradually, until it was ready to host Governmental affairs. Even today, Prague Castle operates on a day to day basis. The activities are marked by two symbolic events that includes changing of guard every hour and flag rising at noon. Prague Castle is targeted especially to the international tourists. The guided tours are offered in six different languages.

Indeed, Castles are splendid creations that open the doors for the people to peek-a-boo in the ancient history, lifestyle, royalty of kings and queens, fortifications and defensive tactics. However, not everyone remain in good condition today and those which are there, some amidst them are closed for preserving the monuments. But someone are open for public viewing, make sure that you get in anyone of the above and explore the history.
