A festival of joy in Ecuador

A festival of joy in Ecuador

I have been here for no more than an hour. It is the Corpus Christi festival held in Cuenca, Ecuador but I’ve known her for more than a few weeks now. The little mop-haired, beady eyed girl can be no more than seven or eight years old, even if she looks older than her age. Ours was a friendship forged on the sort of opening line one friend doesn’t normally say to another. In halting English, she asked me if I wanted my shoes polished. I politely refused her offer, smiling inwardly when I saw that I was wearing a pair of simple canvas sneakers that she couldn’t have polished at all. I found her lack of observation interesting; she found my wobbly Spanish to be even more interesting.

In the weeks that followed, she taught me (at my request) several gestures and phrases that would doubtlessly offend Ecuadorians and I [...]

Memoirs of Paris

Memoirs of Paris

I lust for Paris as I know it, a small slice of the city of light. Perhaps I am just a bit homesick and missing what I consider my spiritual home, but that is impossibility, for I am here in Paris. This gut-wrenching feeling hits me every time I return here, as if the city I once embraced lovingly is now giving me the cold shoulder, as if it resents me. It hits me every single time. I have lived here and left, and re-visiting is like sitting down for dinner with an ex-lover; you can try and try, but the relationship will never be as good as it once was.

Emily and I have been here for four days. Four days…how time flies when you are shaking off the after-effects of jet lag and swimming in the mutual love for one another. I almost didn’t notice that our chambre à [...]

Ras Al Khaimah: Where eagles prey on the imagination

It is only you get up close that you realize the golden eagle’s claws are like a razor’s edge, lethal and cutting. The one perched on the falconer’s hand is simply clamping down with all her force and wings spread slightly, an expression of her anger. She is, in her own way, like a child that wanted a particular toy or perhaps it is more a case of a woman scorned. Hell hath no fury like it. She continues to stomp, as if evening out a small sandy dune. But she is hooded and thus no threat. I’m just glad that she isn’t perched on my hand; she seems a real handful.
‘In the wild, the female is the more dominant of the two genders. The key is to be fearless, it is almost as if they can smell it coming from a mile away. Just go in there and grab [...]

Lake Natron’s natural beauty

Lake Natron’s natural beauty

I feel that tingling sensation creeping up my derriere, but I ignore it for now. I cannot move, not a millimeter, since I will lose the element of stealth and cover if I do. I am in a soda lake, and the silent reminders are to make a move on, but I refuse stubbornly and stay put. It is flamingo rush hour, and I have spent the better part of five hours convincing these pink feathery friends of mine that I mean them no harm and that I am not here at all. Gawky, a bit bumbling and beautifully regal, their extensible necks and pink plumage almost make me forget that my bottom is being subjected to soda burns.

I bet Sir David Attenborough was never subjected to this.
The flamingoes are used to the extreme alkalinity unlike my nether regions and they feed on the algae found in soda lakes spread [...]

The phantom hotel

The phantom hotel

At the heart of the world’s most secretive society, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a sight that is almost entirely Frankenstein like in its scope, size and monstrosity. Pyongyang’s Ryugyong Hotel is definitely high up the list of the world’s ugliest hotels, and it is probably in with a very serious shot of winning. It’s the world’s 22nd largest skyscraper, and it’s got enough ugliness within its 105 storeys to be spread around the 21 buildings taller than it. It’s been vacant since 1992, when construction stopped and it will always stay that way, it’s grotesque form trapped in time.
Getting into North Korea is hard enough as it is, and DPRK’s problems are as well documented as they can be for a society so shut to the world. But what cannot be hidden is the hideous building that dominates the Pyongyang skyline. If a picture can tell [...]

Sydney is supposed to be the easiest city to travel as the buses and ferries, city circle train, the monorail or even walking on foot is the best way of seeing the city attractions. The traveling will not cost much to your pocket.
