Embrace Christ the Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro
March 4, 2010 – 12:07 am | No Comment

Imagine getting a hug from a thirty-meter statute. Sometimes we have heard that the God is a Brazilian. Well don’t know about that, but at least we can see a small part of him in Portuguese as Christ O Redentor or in Rio de Janeiro as Statue of Christ the Redeemer. The Christ the Redeemer is one of the best Statues, which gives a permanent hug to the city of Brazil below it. The width of one hand to other measures around Thirty meter!

The Statue of the Christ the Redeemer, on the apex of the Corcovado Mountain, is one of the most loved and admired statue in Brazil. The statute is situated in Rio de Janeiro at the 2,300 feet height at the top of the Corcovado Mountain. It weights approximately 635 tons and is 120 feet tall. The statue of Jesus Christ is among the new Seven World of the World. As the statue symbolizes the Christianity, it represents Brazil and holds great importance in the Brazilians’ hearts. The statue is the most visited place in Brazil and no one can overlook it for anything else in world as it has long history and meaning to it existence.

christ the redeemer
The history of the State is very interesting. The Catholic Church in Brazil first envisages this statue for a campaign to collect charity in 1921. The dream was brought into reality when the country completed its 100 years of independence. It took nearly ten years to collect enough funds to build this statue. But the first illustration of the statue thought by the designer, Carlos Oswaldo, was completely different of what we see now. His idea was to build Jesus standing on the pedestal, which represents world and globe in his hands, with a cross. But the people of Brazil suggested building a statue of Jesus, spreading his arms towards the city. The construction of the statue began in 1926 and finished after five years in 1931. The statue wasn’t sculpted in Brazil but in France by the French sculptor, Paul Landowski. After it was made by piece and piece, it was shipped to Brazil and then by train it was brought to the top of Corcovado Mountain, where the pieces were later assembled. The statue even after so many years have not decayed or cracked as it is made of soapstone that has weather resistance capacity. After it was completed, it became the largest corvado mountainsculpture deco monument in the world.

The Corcovado Mountain was not their only choice to set the statue of Christ, another options were other near by hills and Sugarloaf Mountain. The reason they chose Corcovado Mountain because of the overlooking view of the city and it would look like Jesus Christ is hugging the city. From up above the mountain, the mountain has spectacular views of the city where you can see 360-degree view of the city as well as the three famous beaches of the city: Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana; and landmarks such as the Maracana Stadium, the Botanical Gardens and Jockey Club. Just the views of the city below and from down the mountain the sight of Jesus with arms open are not the only exciting sights. The journey up to the top of the mountain and vice versa, through the rainforest of Atlantic is amazing. The forest vegetation is very much different from the other forest areas like Amazon or any other place. While coming down take a stop to one of the waterfall on the mountain as well as explore other areas of the forest, other than top of the mountain.

If you don’t want tour around like any other tourists, then rent a bike and go biking on the mountain or jog around in the forest. You might get surprised with its unique beauty. The Rio people love to bike and jog around the region which will give you an opportunity to interact with the locals. When you are done seeing the statue of Jesus closely, go for parasailing. Parasailing gives a very different outlook of the Rio de Janeiro city. It’s pretty adventurous to do also as you take off from the most high altitude mountain which is scary too. But if you have a brave heart then go for it and give it a shot, you won’t regret it.

If you ever visit Brazil, do visit Rio de Janeiro to see the Christ the Redeemer Statue at the apex of the Corcovado Mountain. Being to the city and not seeing this statue then it would be real waste to visit Rio. The sight of the statue from down below the mountain just fills the heart with lot of love for Jesus and you will feel really good and inspired after this trip. The statue also has such a long history behind it that it would be shame to miss such inspiring monument.
